SPEC Utrecht — Color Darkroom

Workshops

Color handprinting from color-negative

4 hours

In this workshop, you will learn how to make analog color hand prints (RA4) from color negatives (C41). Please note: positive (E6) slide film is not suitable. You can bring 35mm, medium format, or 4×5″ sheet film to this course.

You will learn everything needed to produce a beautiful handprint. We will go through how to efficiently use test strips to achieve the correct exposure/colorbalance, what pre-flash entails, and how to apply it effectively. We will also cover the different paper types and there will be room for individual creative experiments.

Experience in a black and white darkroom is helpful but not required. Bring developed negatives that you want to use to make a print. Decide in which roll you want to use for a contact print and pre-select 3-5 images from your archive that you would like to handprint. Bring something to eat for a short break in between. The day looks something like this:

11:00 Introduction
11:30 Basic explanation of the paper processor; we will make the first test strips and a contact print.
12:00 - 15:00 Printing! We will discuss various printing techniques and you will learn how to effectively correct colors.

Chemistry and paper (24 x 30 cm) will be provided. At the end of the workshop you will receive a PDF with a summary of everything we covered.

If you want to book this workshop for two people or more, you can suggest your own preferred date.
