For film photographers searching for a color darkroom in the Netherlands — including those looking for a doka in Amsterdam or kleurendoka near Rotterdam — SPEClab offers a reliable and affordable alternative within short travel distance. We are conveniently located about a 6 minute walk from Utrecht Zuilen trainstation which is easily accessible from most major cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Eindhoven. Alternatively, there are semi-public color-darkrooms situated in Den Bosch (De Lichtkamer) and Arnhem (Analoog Studio Arnhem).
Do you also develop film, or can I use the darkroom to develop it myself?
The SPEC darkroom is equipped for analog printing of color film. For developing C41 color film or B&W rolls yourself, you can become a member of CAFU (€30 per year), our neighbors. Here you can use the (black and white) darkroom and all facilities for €3 per hour.
If you live in Utrecht and would like to have your films developed nearby we recommend Bram's Film Lab, under the Vaartsche Rijn NS station.
Can I start printing after the introduction?
The introduction is for experienced printers. This is not a workshop and is mandatory for your first session. We will go over all the equipment to make sure you know your way around and help you identify and solve small hiccups that may occur. You will also receive your personal storage box that you can leave in the dark-room so you don't have to drag paper around between seperate sessions.
If you are new to color-darkroom printing we offer monthly workshops in which we go over every aspect of the process and where you learn how to adjust colours, contrast and exposure efficiently.
Can I share my session with a colleague?
Yes! As long as your colleague has followed the introduction and has attended a workshop.
Can I scan my prints?
Yes, we have an Epson V600 scanner that does a great job at scanning your prints in detail. Please bring your own laptop to connect it to.
Can I bring my own paper?
Chemistry costs/disposal are calculated into the price of our paper, therefor we only allow the use SPEC-bought paper. This way we keep the darkroom accessible for users with a lower output and we can keep the place running.
Can you help me during my session?
There is no staff present to help you during your session. In our courses we teach you everything you need to know to produce a balanced print and we go over all common issues and mistakes. After that, we believe printing comes down to experience, experimentation and personal preference. Troubleshooting is always available over the phone/messaging in case you get stuck during your session.

Can I extend my session?
If you want to print longer than anticipated, you can extend your session when there are no other bookings.
What is the biggest size I can print?
Our biggest processor takes up to 50x75cm and is available by request - 24x30cm and 30x40cm is readily available.
Can I cancel or move my session?
Yes! You can cancel or move your shift as long as you let us know 32 hours before the start of your session, use the link at the bottom of your confirmation e-mail to cancel or contact us via messaging or e-mail to move your session.
